YY Control Cable
What is YY Control Flexible Cable?
YY Control Cable is a flexible multi-core cable with class 5 stranded copper conductors, PVC insulation and a grey PVC sheath that is manufactured generally to BS6500 and VDE0250 standards.
There is a Low Smoke Zero Halogen – or LS0H – version of this versatile YY Flex. The LS0H YY Control Cable has a similar construction – it simply uses XLPE insulation and a grey LS0H sheath in place of PVC layers.
How is YY Cable constructed?
| 1 | Conductor | Class 5 plain stranded flexible copper conductors to BS EN 60228:2005 (previously BS6360), VDE0295 |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Insulation | YY PVC: PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type YI2 YY LS0H:XLPE (Cross-Linked Polyethylene) |
| 3 | Sheath | YY PVC: PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Type YM2 YY LS0H: LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) |
By what other names is YY Cable known?
YY Cable is also referred to as Instrumentation Cable, Unscreened, Flexible or Unshielded Control Cable and YY Control Flex.
Which industries use YY Control Flexible Cable?
Suitable for use in a number of industries, YY Flex is found frequently in building and construction, rail and transport infrastructure, and automation and process control.
YY Cable is designed for use on assembly and production lines, conveyors, in machine tool manufacture and in computer units. This unscreened YY flex works well as interconnecting cable for measuring, controlling or regulation in signal and control equipment. Its flexible layers make YY Cable ideal for linking fixed and mobile equipment – as well as projects involving light mechanical stress and fixed installations.
With the right protection (such as keeping it out of direct sunlight), YY Control Cable is useful in outdoor projects, although it is mostly found in either dry or moist indoor environments.
What is BS6500?
BS6500 is a British Standard – the last version of which was updated in 2000. It highlights requirements for the dimensions, construction and mechanical and electrical properties of insulated flexible cables with voltage ratings up to and including 300V/500V. This standard applies to YY Cable, SY Cable, CY Cable and other electrical cables used with appliances and equipment in domestic or similar environments. More information on BS6500.
When would I need to use LS0H YY Cable?
If installation is in a public building, such as a school, office or hospital, LS0H YY Cable should be used. When exposed to fire, the cable’s LS0H sheath emits very low levels of smoke and non-toxic levels of halogen gas (typically under 0.5% HCl emission). LS0H may also be referred to as LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free), 0HLS (Zero Halogen Low Smoke), LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) or HFFR (Halogen Free Flame Retardant).
When should I use SY or CY Control Cable?
If mechanical protection is required, SY Flexible Control Cable – with its galvanised steel wire braiding – is a suitable alternative. CY Control Cable also offers a certain level of mechanical protection with its copper screening, but is best installed in situations requiring the low-interference transmission of data.
